The area
Wengen sits at 1,274 metres on a sunny terrace above the Lauterbrunnen valley, facing the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It is one of Switzerland's classic car-free villages: no traffic noise, just cowbells, railways and mountain air.
Wengen is reached only by rail. Travel to Lauterbrunnen, then take the Wengernalp railway up the mountainside to Wengen station. From Zurich or Geneva airports the journey takes around three to four hours, with one or two changes.
Chalet Aelpli stands at Oberer Schiltwald, a short walk above the village centre. Ask for directions when you call to book.
Wengen belongs to the Jungfrau ski region, with slopes running from the village up toward Männlichen and Kleine Scheidegg. The famous Lauberhorn downhill course passes just above the village each January.
Ski lifts and the Männlichen gondola are reached easily from the chalet side of the village.
In summer the same mountains turn into one of Switzerland's great hiking areas. The trail to Kleine Scheidegg, the panorama path to Männlichen and the walk down to Wengernalp all start within easy reach.
Well-marked paths suit every level, from lakeside strolls to full-day ridge walks.
The Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe, is a classic day trip: rail via Kleine Scheidegg to the highest station in Europe at 3,454 metres. Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen's waterfalls and the Schilthorn are all within a day's reach by rail and cable car.
